[ARCHIVED] SMiShing Alert: Fake DMV Text Messages Targeting NJ Residents

smishing

Over the last week, the NJ Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) has received several reports of an SMS phishing (SMiShing) scam impersonating the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The texts claim you owe a traffic ticket and must pay by May 29 or face suspension of vehicle registration, increased toll charges, and negative credit impact. The messages include suspicious URLs containing “ezpassnj” and “.gov” to appear legitimate and instruct you to reply “Y” to access a link.

Key facts:

  • NJ MVC only sends texts for appointment reminders.
  • NJ E-ZPass does not send unsolicited texts to collect payments.
  • These messages aim to steal your personal and financial information.

What to do:

  • Do not click on suspicious links or respond to unknown texts.
  • Visit official websites directly to verify any issues.
  • Report smishing attempts to the FTC, FBI IC3, and NJCCIC.
  • Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM).
