Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 13,650 people and 5,497 housing units in New Providence. There were 4,944 households, of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a male householder with no spouse/partner present, 23.4% had a female householder with no spouse/partner present, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.26.

In New Providence the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 19, 3.7% from 20 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43.3 years.  


Most New Providence residents hold professional, managerial, or other executive positions in their business or industry with an above average salary. Among the most common occupations in New Providence are:

Approximately 71.2% of workers in New Providence work for companies, 19.2% work for the government and 8.1% are self-employed. 


According to the 2020 Census, the median income for a household in the borough was $155,370, the, the median income for a family was $179,838, and per-capita income was $73,725. About 1.0% of the population was below the poverty line, including 0.1% of those under age 18 and 2.0% of those age 65 or over.

The MHPD is an interactive tool that provides the public easy access to key data regarding housing in their communities, including detailed data on housing conditions, costs, production, needs, households in the state, and eviction filings and warrants of removal data at the zip code level for 2022 through 2024. The MHPD’s data is updated annually. It aggregates data from the Department of Community Affairs’ Division of Codes and Standards, the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the 2025 Point-In-Time Homeless Count, and the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts.
