Local Regulations

The New Providence Police Department wishes to advise all persons of local municipal ordinances that regulate certain activities. If additional information is needed, please feel free to contact the appropriate municipal office.

Snow Emergencies - No Parking

Borough Ordinance 257-38

  1. Whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the streets or highways, an emergency shall exist and no vehicle shall be parked on the streets or highways or portions thereof. The above parking prohibitions shall remain in effect until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic.
  2. Any unoccupied vehicle parked or standing in violation shall be deemed a nuisance and a menace to the safe and proper regulation of traffic, and any police officer may provide for the removal of such vehicle. The owner shall pay the reasonable costs of the removal and storage which may result from such removal before regaining possession of the vehicle.

General Parking Regulations

Restricted parking areas are well marked in New Providence. The New Providence Police Department asks that you observe all parking signs and comply with the regulations.

Overnight Parking

New Providence residents are now able to request overnight parking permission online.

Effective October 1, 2020, the New Providence Police Department (NPPD), in cooperation with Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center (MVECC) will begin utilizing Frontline Public Safety Solutions online portal to provide a virtual means of requesting overnight parking permission in the Borough of New Providence.

The online portal is available to all residents.

Commuter Parking Lots

New Providence maintains two parking areas for local commuters. They are located at the New Providence and the Murray Hill Railroad Stations. Quarterly or Annual parking permits are available through the Municipal Clerks Office. Call 908-665-1400, ext. 0 or contact the Borough Clerk's Office for further information about rates. Limited daily parking is also available at each parking lot.

Peddling, Soliciting, & Canvassing - Permits Required

Peddlers, Solicitors and Canvassers are required to obtain a permit before they may begin selling, soliciting or canvassing. Permits are available through the Borough Clerk's Office. Definitions

  • Peddler: Any person who travels from place to place, street to street or house to house, or remains in a stationary location with the purpose of selling goods or wares.
  • Canvasser: Any person who travels from house to house for the purpose of obtaining the views of any person or for the purpose of distributing literature, pamphlets, circulars, samples and the like for purposes of information, advertising or for commercial purposes.
  • Solicitor: Any person who travels fro house to house or apartment to apartment to sell or deliver goods by sample or to take orders for the future delivery of goods or services.

Use of Playgrounds & Parks

New Providence is the proud home of many exceptional parks and recreation facilities. Many playgrounds are located in the park facilities to provide enjoyment for people of all ages.

New Providence Borough Ordinance § 191-1 (h) states that it is unlawful for any person to: be in any parks and playgrounds between dusk and 6 am, prevailing time, as such parks and playgrounds are declared closed to public use during those hours, except upon approval of the Borough Council. This restriction does not apply to Centennial Park or Veterans Park.

Certain parks may be reserved for special events such as family gatherings, corporate events or other social functions. Permits are required to reserve a park. Please contact the New Providence Recreation Department for further information at 908-665-8258.

Alcohol is prohibited in all municipal parks. Permits may be obtained at the police department for a waiver of these regulations for special events. For further information, please call the New Providence Police Department at 908-665-1111, or contact the Chief of Police for further information.
